Now that we're driving a Wrangler Altitude Unlimited instead of the Cherokee Trailhawk I have not seen any tank get over 20 mpg US. Most are in the 19-19.5 mpg range, but that is when we are on a trip, with the truck rather heavily loaded, and doing a lot of ups and downs in the mountains between here and eastern B.C. I don't check the mpg driving around town as I'm afraid it would make me cry. That mpg is on 87 oct though and we always ran the THawk on 89. I'll try a few tanks of 89 in the Wrangler and see if the mpg improves. - Cheers, Ted

Great mpg with 2014 TH w/ tow

Did a 2700 mile road trip over the past week and got what I'd call amazing mileage on the TH. Trip meter says 56 mph average (2700 mi / 48.25 hr), at 26.6 mpg, which includes an hour or two of offroad/trails. Now at 21k miles on the TH.

The last 300 miles, between Boise and Lewiston, I got 27.5 mpg on the EVIC averaging 60-65 mph. Gas gauge roughly agrees, have about 3/8 tank left (filled up in Boise). On the 80-85 mph in the interstate it was more like 22-24 mpg avg.

This is with the latest PCM/TCM updates (applied July 2016), drop-in aFE pro dry air filter, Auxmart whispbars, otherwise stock.

23.5 highway (75mph)
20 city 45-0-45-0-45-0 you know the drill
Been getting this for a whole year.

FYI: I just did a 150 mile trip with no cruise control used and saw an unexpected better mileage report from the computer....

Edmonton to Lethbridge and back again.. (520 kms trip / 325 miles), no tow package... 2016 TH with only 700 kms on it at the time.

Did 10.5L/100 kms (22.4 MPG) on the way down, had cruise set to 120 kph (75 mph) all the way. I wasn't impressed, but then again the Jeep is still breaking itself in and the tranny was still figuring itself out. Had to fill up 3/4 of the way thru in Claresholm.

Return trip did 8.8L/100 kms (26.7 MPG) and again had cruise set to 120 kph (75 mph) all the way. Had 1/4 tank left when I got home. Pretty pleased with this result, although my old 2013 Grand Cherokee's personal best was 8.4L/100 kms (28.0 MPG)

Traffic was relatively the same on both trips.

Fuel consumption

I just got my TH 3.2 2018, and it is making 22-25 L/100Km inside the city. I am very scared with this numbers, I know it is winter and I am living in Winnipeg, but it still makes me think that I didn't make a good deal. What you think?

Thank you

HI there fellow Canuck and welcome to JCC ;)

I live in an area that is not that much warmer than Winnipeg. My V6 North (Latitude) does roughly 15-16L /100Km in colder snaps, and that is mostly small city driving with a little rural road driving at 80 Km/h. You numbers are a little scary, I agree with you.

Do you let the Jeep idle to warm up a lot ? That is an mpg killer right there. I let mine idle 5-8 minutes in the morning (winter), once a day, no more no matter how cold it is out there. I don't do a lot of bumper-to-bumper driving, it's a small city here, but stop-and-go in winter is also an mpg killer. So is a heavy right foot...

The only way I could see 25L/100Km (that's 9.5 mpg folks) is if you let the Jeep idle 15 minutes a few times a day, drive in stop-and-go traffic a lot, and have a relatively heavy right foot...

OK, that's really poor mileage.
Even at our coldest so far this winter in SK (and with 4X4 locked in) my worst tank was 17.5 L/100 km....mostly with the idling. Fortunately I have underground parking so it minimizes that factor for the most part, but there is still some at the other end of the daily drive. I take it you do a lot of idling to warm up?
Everything should improve once things warm up some although even at my best tank on the highway I'm usually running around 10 to 11 L/100 km

I think you need to give it some time to settle in. Also depends alot on when you reset to mileage / trip A and B. In the cold, I see anywhere from 15 l/100 to 17-18 l/100 depending on how deep the snow is, how cold it is, how long I let the Jeep warm up, remote start and how long it runs etc. Also keep an eye on your tire pressure as it gets colder the pressure goes down. I try to keep mine in the 270 to 280 KPA range unless it goes down to -20c then maybe a little lower... depends on the temperature when your filling the tires...

Bottom line is when it is cold, don't concentrate too much on your mileage just enjoy being able to go where others can't and doing it safely :) These things can slog through a lot of snow without breaking a sweat.

Break in time for mpg could take awhile, at least a few thousand miles for the engine, maybe more.

Also its the transmission that takes break in time, as far as the AL process goes. Not anywhere as bad as in 2014/2015 models were. The AL process has been abbreviated considerably with the newer software. All the gears must start balancing with the rpm that the engine is running at, or keep the engine within that narrow rpm range to deliver that optimal mpg.

At least in my case (2014 V6) it took almost 3,000 miles to start using 8th gear. After a major TCM/PCM software upgrade a year later it took 1,000 miles to get 8th back. Getting 8th gear is critical to achieving great mpg on the highway. You can check that out next time you are out driving. Move the shifter over to the left and your currant gear you are in will show. I can achieve 8th between 57/58 mph and up. Easily in 60mph and above.

A few tips, some of which have been mentioned.
* Tire pressure: as per the door is the recommended balance between handling and ride. I run mine at 35/36 year round. If I am towing I increase those numbers a bit. Just remember cold air reduces those numbers considerably. Warmer air will increase those numbers. That is air temperature when you check your tires. Also always check cold before driving.
* The Cherokee does not need a lot of warm up time when its cold. Just drive, avoiding higher speeds till the engine temp starts to increase.
* Weight on board the Cherokee has an impact on your mpg. The Trail Hawk is heavier than the other Cherokees mainly due to the skid plates. That will lower the mpg as compared to other non Trail Hawks.
* The use of 4WD will guzzle gas as compared to FWD. FWD is the default for the Cherokee when using "auto". It will go between 4WD and FWD as needed seamlessly. If you use "sport" or the other modes your mpg will drop probably in the area of 2+ mpg. Just watch your rpm's when in sport mode as compared to "auto" mode. Higher rpms= lower mpg in general.
* Driving type as far as aggressive heavy on the gas is tough on mpg.

No CDN diesel here at least up to 2018.
The grand Cherokee overland is the only diesel Jeep here.
3.2 l petrol tow package TH City average is about 13.5 l/100 km /combined highway. Highway depends on how many hills it has to tackle it really sucks gas, going up hills, 30 is routine while on flats it can be 9.1 with occasional glimpses of 6 when there's a tail wind.
The OPs Winnipeg home town is about the same size as Bendigo only flatter. . Unless they have a heavy foot 22 seems way high.
Hope after 10 k km that improves. Cold weather tire pressure lowering can produce poor gas mileage unless adjusted frequently.

Cold weather and frozen kit seems to play havoc with the KL's various components - it might pay to thaw it out and dry it down for a day and see if that makes a difference. Mine cycles - -30 to +10C depending on where I take it through the winter.

Anyone have a TH V6 with tow package if so would you mind letting me know what type of mpg you are seeing in the city and on the highway.

Cheers
Rene

I've been getting around 12L/100kms. Or for a better representation, I can get a little over 400kms a tank on the highway heading home from Edmonton doing about 120kms most of the way. Around town I can usually get around 250kms or so. Eats up way more gas because of the high idle in the winter when using the command start. Now, I've seen some impressive stuff with custom tunes, CAI, and an upgraded throttle body spacer. My friends Wrangler JK was getting 800kms to a tank before. Now sure if those results would replicate on a KL though.

I have a 2015 Cherokee TH V6 with tow package with a mpg city and highway driving combined for a tank full.
I get 550 km which would be 342 miles, at 25.6 per CDN gal or USA gal would be 20.5 gal.
This is my first winter with the Jeep.I live just outside Winnipeg , Manitoba area.

I park in an insulated garage but not headed. In winter I normally start and only run the jeep for about two minutes then pull out and go. I drive slower for the first two miles. I often get 8L/100km doing 105/ 65 mph on the highway.
Mileage per tank of gas range city/ highway driving combine
  • 550 km = 342 miles
  • 25.6 miles per cda gallon
  • 20.6 usa gallon
