Oh, @Xinarin13, the reason I jumped in earlier on the thread is that my Dodge dealer stated that "spontaneous failure" was rare, but not unknown, and that's why they repaired mine under warranty. Note that the vehicle was less than 24 hours off the lot and had ~3 miles on it when I got it.
In that case I can understand how it could be bad piece of glass.

I do completely understand that, and to be honest a lot of how Auto Glass works doesn't make sense with the Hollywood ideas on how it works. It's like trying to kick a windshield out, which is not possible on any vehicle build after 1990

If all that is holding the rear KL window in is glue, maybe you CAN kick it out. ;) Just not by breaking through the glass.

You would think, but the polyurethane forms a permanent bond with the body and the glass, so much so that during a roll over accident Federal standards for polyurethane require that it least 50% of every side and 50% of the whole of the bond must remain intact no matter what.

I filed a complaint with U.S. DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration waiting for a response. I figure if that if there are many cases of spontaneous glass breakage, then Manufacturer has to accountable.
Insurance covers minus the deductible.
good news, don't forget other consumer protection avenues such as

  • local attorney generals office
  • consumer protection bureau
  • better business bureau
  • open letter to local newspaper
  • letter to consumer reports magazine

My rear window just exploded also

Driving slowly down the road and just a big bang and my rear window shattered ... no passing traffic and nothing hit it. Ofcourse chrysler are telling me they wont cover it ... this is just too coincidental to happen to so many people. My kid was sitting in the back seat also :frown: ... It blew from the inside out you can see that and there was a cushion in the back ... nothing big or bulky ... the thing just exploded.

If there was a big bang, something hit your window... when glass spontaneously breaks it is almost silent (excepting if the glass falls, then the falling glass makes noise.)

Kid with pellet gun, lawnmower, weed whacker, bird dropping a stone thinking it is a shell, there are a number of things it could have been.

Are you aware of any scratches or chips in it previously? I've read here and there that tempered glass can become volatile with even minor imperfections.

Out of curiosity, how cold was it inside and how hot outside? Was the Sun blaring on it from behind when it shattered? No-one as provided details on this, but I'm curious if temp difference has anything to do with it since they have a rather steep curve wrapping around to the side IMO.

I was in the middle of nowhere with no one or houses around .... the bang was the glass exploding and it blew from the inside... i just washed the car 2 days ago and no imperfections at all ... it just happened and nothing hit my window. It was very hot and sunny outside about 30 and ac was full inside. Ya maybe a ufo drop something on my car but i highly doubt it ... nothing around for miles.

Ummm according to glass experts it can be a bang or a click ... it is not silent ... that is from the experts ... watch this video ... it does happen and more frequently so please stop telling people it doesn't :)

There are potential faults in anything produced by man or the machines they build to produce a final product. In the case of tempered glass there is fabrication debris that can potentially cause a failure over time. I don't think anyone of us here are experts in the manufacturing process of tempered glass, if so please excuse me. Having multiple instances of random blowouts from the same model vehicle is definitely cause for alarm. I just hope they got their $#it together for the 2016 model year.

All I'm saying is that I work in the industry and that I disagree. Manufacturing defects do occur, but they fail quickly after being exposed to the elements. If you have had the vehicle longer than a year and have been driving it, and your glass breaks, then it is almost guaranteed due to an external force acting upon the glass.

But the guy in the video said it can take up to twenty years for it to explode

So I just thought I would let everyone know that the dealership have replaced my rear window out of courtesy :)

Today, August 13, I bought a brand new Renegade Trailhawk - within 2 hours of driving the car off the car lot, my rear window shattered out of the blue while driving down the road! I will go in on Monday to hopefully get this back window replaced.
