I am the designer of the SmartStopStart module for the WK2 Grand Cherokee.

I need a volunteer to let me have access to his or her 3.2 V6 KL Cherokee with the ESS feature in to finalize the Cherokee version of my product which allow you to select the start-up default for ESS.

I estimate I will need access for a couple of hours or so. I can come to you or you can come to me in Arlington, VA...your preference. All I will be doing is reading some data from the diagnostic port and testing the product.

You will get a free module in exchange. If I need any time over 2 hours, I will pay additional cash of $100 an hour. Please PM me if interested.

The SmartStopStart module has been in for a few weeks now. All OK; hardly know it's there and I certainly don't miss the annoying 2+ second stop-start's at stop signs, which represents most of our driving (yeah I know FCA advertises it to be .3 sec but by the time the engine is back running it's a lot longer than that). Best thing is eliminating the "last restart" when ending the trip. :) It's easy enough to activate the stop start when needed, which occurs about once a week.

Pity that it's necessary to use such a large module for this. My OBDII bluetooth adapter is much smaller. I suppose I too will be getting a 90 extension cable for it. Wouldn't it be nice if Carista supported FCA vehicles so we could change default settings and enable hidden features like I did on my VWs. Nonetheless I am very happy that this is now available and will be placing my order.

Just wanted to say that this module is the best mod I've done or likely will ever do to my Cherokee. I absolutely love it!

I also bought the flat OBDII cable someone linked to earlier but I'm not using it because the cable is on the wrong (hood release) side. It would be much cleaner if the cable came off the opposite side. It could probably be made to work okay but it's not really needed. Despite the way it looks in the previously posted photos, the module isn't actually in the way and I have yet to accidentally bump it and doubt that I will.

A big thanks to the guy who made this wonderful accessory that makes ESS work the way it should.

I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk V6 - So I am fortunate enough to not have the stupid ESS system installed in the first place. But my mom has recently purchased a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk L Plus V6 - so her's has the Engine Stop/Start and she is not a fan of it at all. Just ordered the SmartStartStop plug in for her and the 40 off deal is fantastic! Thanks SmartStartStop team for such a useful and needed product and the 40 off is a nice bonus! Thanks again

@whitexkr

I don't want to derail the ESS topic too far, but since you have experience with OBD2 and what I presume is a CAN Bus command. I wanted to plant a seed. For those of us that have modified our KLs a bit and added larger tires we desperately need the following as none of the big players are interested in supporting the KL.

  • Alter Tire Rolling Diameter (This would correct the speedometer as well as adjust the shift points)
  • Alter the TPMS low warning (Larger tires need less air)
  • High idle mode for winching

Other things similar programmers offer are how the DRLs work and many add fog light options like fogs on with highbeams.

It looks like you are getting some excitement over the ESS module which is awesome, but these other features are far more important to me personally.

I'd be in if it lit its LED when the Torque Transfer Device clutch was engaged. Then we'd know when the rear wheels were actually getting power.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I am always looking for ideas to expand my offerings and/or improve my products. I am giving it serious consideration.

I too have wondered why the Superchips Flashcal or the AEV Procal have not come out with a KL version of their Jeep Wrangler product to allow you to customize multiple parameters like wheels size, TPMS, etc. I think they still may eventually as the base of vehicles continues to grow. It seems to me that these companies already have hardware and software they could leverage to do a similar KL product with minimal effort.

I've been out of the loop for a bit dealing with family issues, home remodel project and such, but in all the reading I obviously missed this, but I saw the disclaimer on your website that states "This item cannot be used on California registered vehicles. Sorry, no exceptions." Why is this?? I've gotten in the habit of turning it off when I'm in an area with frequent stops and starts, but thought it would be great to have this. Guess us in Ca. are "out of the car"?

Hi Tony-
To be sold or used in CA, aftermarket products require approval of the California Air Resources Board (C.A.R.B.) to assure their is no emissions impact. These rules are vigorously enforced. You can go to their website and see all of the hundreds of companies, big and small, they have pursued big $ penalties against for not complying.

It is costly and time consuming to obtain the approval. I am considering it, but I am not sure the investment makes sense at this time.

I'll bump this thread for the best upgrade I've done to my Cherokee. I hate ESS and this module provides the control over it that Jeep should have. Now I can leave ESS off and turn it on whenever I choose without it resetting to "on" every time I turn the ignition off. At first I thought it would be easy to remember to turn ESS off on every engine start but it isn't. I'd forget sometimes and then get pissed off when my engine shut off at the first stop sign. A bit pricey but worth every penny IMO. I couldn't live without it.

Avg MPG in the country has gone up. I attribute that to no 'stop-restarting' at the quick stops at stop signs.

If you don't have the bucks to spend on that item you could just set the time before it activates. From 0 to 10 minutes. It would be unusual to spend more than a couple of minutes at a light or standstill. I don't know if all the Cherokees can be set in this manner but see the attached link...................

That isn't for that, all that setting does is determine how long to keep power on for radio and windows in the Jeep when the key is switched off but you don't open the door, also I use the ESS Disable works like a charm. I pop it out before Service pop it back in and away we go :)

Welcome to the forum

Not sure it's called *I hate the ESS*. Link works fine here. Are you using a mobile device ? Ad Blocker ? No problem with my computer, FireFox with all the blockers I can put on it.

Direct link : http://www.smartstopstart.com/JeepGarage-Forum-offer.html

I kinda like ESS myself

Funny story..I traded in my '14 Latitude 4cyl for a '17 High Altitude Limited 6cyl in March. I had no idea ESS existed! When I left the dealership and it "died" at a red light I yelled at hubby I was taking it back!!! Thank goodness he had rented a car with this feature and was able to calm me down lol. Thanks for the direct link that one works for me!

What's weird is my stop start function never comes on and I dont have one of these devices. Must just be lucky...

Most usual ones are travelling short distances and battery not fully recharging, or heater/aircon working to hard to shut down engine
