ESS Disable Module

I am the designer of the SmartStopStart module for the WK2 Grand Cherokee.

I need a volunteer to let me have access to his or her 3.2 V6 KL Cherokee with the ESS feature in to finalize the Cherokee version of my product which allow you to select the start-up default for ESS.

I estimate I will need access for a couple of hours or so. I can come to you or you can come to me in Arlington, VA...your preference. All I will be doing is reading some data from the diagnostic port and testing the product.

You will get a free module in exchange. If I need any time over 2 hours, I will pay additional cash of $100 an hour. Please PM me if interested.

Thinking about my stop and reversing I reckon 2 seconds would be better if it's possible. Then while you are in the programming could you look at the low tyre pressure sensor? Or the speedo calibration? :)

+1 on the awesomeness of this. I'll be happy to buy one when it comes out.

Question: How easy is it to install?
It plugs in under the dash, in the diagnostic connector just to the right of the hood release. Takes all of 10 seconds, including bending down and getting up. Tests are going well...I hope to have it for sale sometime in March.

I just became a supporting vendor on this forum. You will be seeing more of me soon.

@whitexkr - are you looking into any other features you can add to it?

For now I am keeping it simple. It is just memorizes your last ESS setting and restores it when you start the vehicle. I learned from selling these to Grand Cherokee and Durango owners over the last few months, that is what most people want.

I do not rule out adding features to broaden the appeal in the future. If I do, my policy is exchange upgrades for the first two years just for the cost of shipping for those who want it.

Just a quick note. @whitexkr popped back in a few weeks ago for a tweak to the programming. My module has been working flawlessly ever since, and my ESS has been permanently disabled since installing the module. No system faults or codes, and I could turn it back on any time I wanted to (although, why would you want to?). Just thought I'd give an update to the forum members.

whitexkr, any idea when these will roll out to the public? I love the exclusivity concept, but I'm sure other members are eager to get their hands on these babies!

I started the rollout today! I have a pretty long waiting list of people who contacted me over the last several months, and they will get an opportunity to buy the first available modules. Then modules will go on public sale in April. When the public sale starts it will be announced in this thread.

Thanks again for all of the support, encouragement and assistance from the Beta testers and members here! A special shoutout to @IRSmart and @gravitywell who both gave me access to their vehicle to make this happen.

I read through the thread and didn't see an answer to this question. Do you have to leave it plugged in or does it work like other tuners where once you program the code you can remove the tuner?

It's not really a tuner. It's not reprogramming anything, and it's not making alterations to your cars software.

Its a module that stays plugged in, and remembers your current setting. When you start the Cherokee, it puts you have in that setting. So, if you turn ESS off, it'll disable ESS everytime you start your car. If you leave ESS on, then it'll be on when you start up.

If you go-to the dealer, just unplug it. No changes, no software alterations, so nothing detectable for them to complain about.

I have been making my way through a long waiting list of people who signed up for one. I needed to pace this out because I could not fill the demand all at once. I am almost done and www.smartstopstart.com should open for ordering for the KL model for anryone who wants one within the next week or two.

I ordered on of these for my 2015 Cherokee Limited and received it this week (I prepaid for it). Plugged it in and it works just like it is supposed to - the Stop/Start setting stays either on or off depending on how you set it and I never have to remember to turn it off (I prefer it off).

I am now a very happy camper - this little accessory makes my Jeep just that much more enjoyable...

It will need be be submitted to The California Air Resources Board for approval. This is expensive and time consuming, so I'll have to see if the business justifies it over time.

Since the module does not increase running emissions, it should pass from that perspective. Overall though, I am not sure if they would pass it because one of the goals of the factory ESS implementation is to set the driver default to on to lower emissions.

Or, a solution is to have it shipped to a "middle man" who will then send it to the CA resident. Of course, we could never condone that behavior, now could we

If I bought one, I'd want to also get a ODBII extension cable with 90 degree connectors so the device wouldn't stick out so far....

I'll admit, it looks like it sticks out incredibly far. However after a few months of use, I've never bumped it, hit it, or otherwise noticed it was there.

That all said...I like the cable idea, I didn't even know this was a thing!

On the Grand Cherokee it lies almost flat...you really have to strain to see it.

I definitely sticks out more on the Cherokee, but so far no one has returned one or even complained because of it. I also use black labels on the Cherokee version to make it a bit more discreet. IMO, the photos above of the prototype (with the white labels) tend to focus on it and accentuate it a bit.
