Hello everyone! I’m helping my aunt find a new suv. She don’t want to spend more then 25,000 list price. I was thinking the Cherokee would be a good fit. I don’t have any experience with the Cherokee’s. I have a Patriot and there is nothing related between them. My grandpa has a 2017 Renegade but he don’t put a lot of miles on it. Anyways would y’all recommend a 2021 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 2.4 4wd?

This is a Cherokee forum so you are going to have a lot of people tell you Cherokees are the best and also a lot of people tell you they are horror stories.

We have leased / purchased a 2014, 2018 and 2020 Cherokee. The 2014 was a case of an early model with a wonky transaxle that I would not put up with.

The 2018 has over 100,000 miles and has had 1 repair which was a shifter bezel wiring harness replacement covered by warranty. This issue was common on 2014 through 2018 Cherokees. The 2019 shifter bezel and wiring were changed to fix this issue.

My 2020 has been great since I picked it up. It’s a year old next week and other than a software issue with SiriusXM Guardian which was corrected with a software update and the incorrect spare tire being installed from the factory (both very minor issues) that were corrected with no protest from FCA or the dealer.

The only issue you will have with a 2.4 Cherokee is that compared to a 2.0 Turbo Hurricane or 3.2 Pentastar, it will be slower off the line and acceleration will be loud.

Also some 2.4L engines are known to burn oil. Though most of them are problem free and the new ones are likely better.

If this is just an around town and short highway trips vehicle then it should be fine and for the price point she is looking at it should be easy to pick up the Latitude trim with AD1

I have a 2018 2.4 4x4 Latitude+. 2 recalls (minor stuff IMO), oil changes, and I just got a crack in my windshield. Very happy with it overall. I would buy another.

Keep in mind any new car is a rolling computer, which can be very costly to repair. If your aunt can swing an extended warranty in her payment, a genuine FCA extended warranty is the way to go. Avoid third party warranty.

Good luck!

At that price point, I would strongly recommend looking at low mileage CPO (certified pre-owned) at the dealer as well, you will get a lot more bang for the buck on a '19 or '20, and 7 years/100K on the power train. Also, with the Cherokee plant shut down for the foreseeable future due to the chip shortage, new Cherokees are a Seller's Market item now...

Unless you are one who wants to do jack rabbit starts, or always one to try to beat traffic and zip and zoom then then 2.4 is fine. Its not gonna be fast but it gets you from point a to b, which for most people that's all that matters. I have a 2019 2.4 and it does just fine.

As far as engine issues all engines have their own problems.
The 2.4l is known for burning oil and requires you to keep an eye on it like every other fuel fill up ( which should be done regardless of this issue).
The V6 is known to have issues with the oil cooler/housing cracking, and rocker arm/cam failure.

IMO go with the 2.0 turbo or 3.2 v6 no matter what kind of driving your going to do. I have had a 2014 TH 4X4 3.2 and a 2015 2 wheel drive 3.2 and a 2019 2 wheel drive 2.0 turbo. As i live in SO CA so i dont need a 4x4 as it adds 500 lbs of weight to the jeep. I you want power go with the 2.0 turbo.

I love my Trailhawk, no doubt. However, if I was just getting an SUV for the street? I’d have to look at the RAV4 and the Nissan Rogue very hard. Both excellent vehicles. The Cherokee is a great SUV too however in the limited package, you loose so much on the interior of what I love about it. The RAV4 and the Rogue are peppier, bit more stylish in there base packages and quicker overall. So other that getting a Trailhawk or Wrangler with off road in mind, I would put too much stock in Jeep. Just my 2¢…😎

Id stay away from the Nissan those CVT beyond junk, have less power then the 2.4L KL, and less towing.

What do you lose interior wise on the limited vs a trailhawk?

He's comparing the Trailhawk and the Latitude. You are losing a lot from a base Trailhawk to a Latitude and I would agree a base competitor SUV has a better interior than a base Cherokee.

As for the CVT, I would stay away also.

The RAV4 is a toss up for me. I had a 2nd generation Rav4 Limited and it was meticulously thought out and beautifully resolved in every way. The new ones are overweight, loose and feature a lot of corporate Toyota parts instead of unique ones, which make it more like a Corolla than a SUV. The quality level is down for sure since I had mine.

About the only differences are the Trailhawk on the seat backs, red accent stitching and the red tab on the console net

I think he was talking about the limited trim on a $25,000 Cherokee, which is probably a base Latitude or Sport. Not a Limited, you aren't getting one of those for $25K...😎

The Trailhawk has red stitching and a couple of accents the limited doesn't if you don't have the leather interior on the Trailhawk.

If you have the Limited you have black stitching or gold stitching depending on your interior color on the seats and black on the dash and shifter.

That's pretty much it.
You beat me to it... My '19 has the silver grey accent stitching...
And I guess if you have the Trailhawk without the Elite/Luxury package, you still get the storage under, and the fold flat, passenger seat

I have the Cherokee Trailhawk Elite. I rented a RAV4 last March 2020 for a week and found it pretty nice. As nice as my Trailhawk? No, not even close but it was pretty cool. My sister has a Rogue, and it’s pretty nice too. Just my 2¢, however if I’m not looking at a 4x4 off road vehicle at all then the market really opens up for an SUV. You can hammer me all you like, but Jeep is NOT the end all of two wheel drive SUVs. For $25k, you’re not looking at one with all the bells and whistles. Seriously…😎

The 2.4 oil burning issue has finally been rooted out, as far as I know. Jeep was awful slow to admit it and address it but they finally seem to have done the right thing. Nobody buying a new car with one of those 2.4's should have to worry about the oil issue anymore.

That being said, the 2.4 is an extremely anemic engine for something the size and weight of a Cherokee. Performance will be very poor vs the competition. Older people will say that they don't care, but then why do brands like Buick and such always seem to have such powerful engines? I think everybody likes having a little pep under the hood on tap when needed, whether they admit it or not.

Regardless of engine, the Cherokee is a nice riding and comfortable buggy. When equipped with any version of the 4x4 its capable of handling more bad weather than the average person is willing to drive in (provided you keep good tires on it).

They are wide-ranging though, a 25k model is going to be awfully spartan compared to the well-equipped trims. Little things like heated seats and wheel, leather, larger radio screen, power tailgate, etc add a lot of swagger and without them you still have a good car but pretty plain compared to what 25k can get you elsewhere...

If she really is resigned to the 2.4 engine to save money maybe even consider looking at the Jeep Compass. 25k stretches a bit farther on that platform in terms of upgrades and creature comforts and its still a 2.4 engine with the 9 speed, in a lighter chassis.

We have both a new Cherokee and a newer Compass in our driveway. The Cherokee is hands down bar none a much better car, but it was also much more expensive almost fully loaded at 40k. The Compass we got a couple years ago and only paid 26.5 for it brand new which was not bad considering we got a Limited trim with full leather, heated seats and wheel, 8.4 inch radio, upgraded rims and trim package, power seat, dual zone climate, 4x4, remote start, passive entry, upgraded color cluster, fog lights, tow package with spare tire, ambient lighting, etc. It was a lot of car for 26.5 thousand (it was stickered a little higher than that but you gotta dicker for a deal 😁).

The pricing overlap of low-end Cherokees and high-end Compasses can be pretty crazy, they both have such a wide range of cheap to WOW (both on price and features). A low-trim Jeep is going to be a good solid car no matter what but if its someone's first purchase from the Jeep brand they will probably say after a while that they really don't see what other people like so much about them. IMO without the upgrades they can be a little lackluster (all of the Jeep models)

Hey, I'm old, and I like all the power I can get!!! I'm not driving no Buick, unless it's an old 455 powered GSX stage 2!!!😎

My 2.4 was trouble free for the six years and 60K miles I owned it. Not just the engine, but the vehicle in general. Only time at the dealer was for warranty oil changes, and two recalls. Great on fuel. It was no rocket, but never let me down in traffic or on the highway. Went with the 2.0T on my new Cherokee, previous to my 2.4 I drove V8 Grand Cherokees...
