Hey guys, I'm new here to the Cherokee club. Recently got a 2019 Cherokee Limited AWD 3.2 V6, I'm trying to get the tow package added to the Jeep. My only concern is that my Final Drive Ratio is 3.251, from my understanding of reading this Thread that means I will not have the Max Towing at 4,500lbs because of that?

If the case is that I am only able to tow max 2,000lbs because of my gearing, how bad would it be for the vehicle to carry a motorcycle on a motorcycle hitch carrier?
Depends on the bike? Is it a dirtbike under 200 pounds?

No it would be a Honda Rebel 500. It weights around 400 pounds
That would double the tongue weight of 200 pounds. I would get a small utility
trailer, and mount a wheel chock up front. Max tow only has a tongue weight
of 450 lbs.

The hitch is physically identical. It can physically handle the additional dead weight as cargo weight. It’s the pulling weight that would be a problem.

I’ve had 550lbs on my hitch with a little bit of flex. And that was about 7’ past the center of the rear axle. A motorcycle carrier should be fine. Far less leverage.

Is the Cherokee gonna sag, you bet! But I’d bet it’ll be fine. The hitch is not any different between the 2000lb rating and 4500lb. So while it can’t tow 4500lbs it can certainly handle 450lbs of tongue weight with ease.

These were the duratrac 245/70r17 P rating. I eventually upgrade to the LT version because my rig got so heavy. P is fine if you’re not heavily modded. Just turn the tire pressure up when hauling heavy stuff like the bike otherwise will feel a little sloppy going down the road because of the soft sidewalls.

Thanks for the input brother. And you didn't have to put a lift on it did you?
I'm just curious as my limited comes with smaller tires, that's my understanding from reading different threads.

Mine was a TH, no lifted needed for the TH. I believe the limited still needs a lift to fit the 245/70 tires. Otherwise stock TH tires 245/65 will fit just fine.

That good to know. I might just do that instead, I need to find a set of TH wheels first to fit the 245/65

Keep in mind that neither the dealer nor anyone else has the capability to install the "tow package," meaning the tow group offered as a factory option that provides a 4,500 lb (4,000 with the turbo) towing capacity. There are hundreds of postings about this on the forum. The dealer can install ONLY the tow hitch replacement bumper and the tow wiring harness, which will give you a 2,000 lb. towing capacity. (If they know what they are doing it should LOOK like the factory tow group when they're done.)
Not true. my tow package for 2022 cherokee X parts where $670 + $70 for brake controller and wring harness. Mopar tow package consists of trailer hitch, wiring harness, bezel, receiver plug. Installing is a hassle because instructions suck. Bumper cover has to come off, stock bumper rebar comes off and is replaced with hitch. Bumper cover has to be cut to accept the bezel (instructions dont match, hassle to not ruin bumper cover). wiring harness takes time to connect and run wire to battery. etrailer.com has brake controller and oem wiring harness which is good.

I have a call out to our dealer about this very topic with our 2020 TH. We found one that was off lease that had everything we wanted (including color, wheels, etc) EXCEPT tow package. We only need light towing capability (jet ski and 2 snowmobiles seasonally), so they are going to add on a hitch and wiring harness this Friday.

Now I have some specific questions to ask them in advance of the work that is scheduled. If I learn anything of interest I will update.

They quoted me $800 even for all of it (including installation).

I thought all TH had everything you need for 4500# towing except he hitch and wire loom. I think your dealer is giving you a great deal. I had a hitch installed on my 18 non-trail hawk by the dealer. Everything was about 1k dollars installed. I only have a 2000# rating because it’s not a TH.

Depends on the year. The tow package included the hitch/receiver, wiring to the vehicle (which include a 7pin connection - e.g. connection to brake activation and reverse lights) but also a different final drive ratio. Earlier TH's such as my 2014 did not have the tow package final drive ratio unless ordered with it. At a certain year (would need to Google again to see when it was), they changed ALL TH's going forward to the tow-package-optimized final drive ratio. The dealer needs to do the install (hitch, wiring and computer update) to show your "build" as a factory installed hitch. You're then "legally" 4,500lb rated. If you don't go this way (e.g. aftermarket hitch, wiring, etc.) you only officially have a 2,000lb rating. Same installation so is there any difference? Physically, probably not. But if you get into an accident and it's determined you were towing a load greater than 'approved' in your vehicle, you could be liable.

His is a 2020…
The final drive is there already. So by doing it through the dealer (hitch, wiring, computer build update), he should get an official 4,500 rating. He should get a commitment from the dealer on this before the install. This would negate any overweight liability issue (though the OP notes he'll only be doing light towing but you never know in the future and if he goes to sell, he can confidently claim it as a 4,500 tow capacity vehicle because it will show that way in a Jeep's dealer vehicle printout. )
