With about 600 miles on the latitude I am noticing a strange noise when engine is hot, almost sounds like a knocking sound that increases with engine rpm. Does not happen all the time but seems to be happening more frequently. Wondering if anybody else hears the same type of noise with the 3.2 engine?

Might be a preignition issue, are you running 87 octane? If so, try 89 next fill up and see if that fixes it. May not be the case since it seems most people are running 87 without problem.

I think I hear the same. I have only started hearing it in the past two days and it seems to be getting worse. Sort of like a valve tap, correct? With mine it's always after the engine is warmed up, and never when it's cold.

Yep, I think we are hearing the same thing. I need to take my truck back for a brake issue, and I will show it to them. The good thing is that the noise is there 100% of the time once the engine warms, so they can't give me the usual "we can't duplicate the problem" excuse.

The dealer service department now has my truck, and they do hear the noise. Just so happens that a Chrysler rep is going to be at the dealer tomorrow, and they are going to keep it and show him or her the noise.

I hope they do not try the typical manufacturer bluff by saying they have never seen this before & they will try to investigate the issue and get back to you. When the noise happens on mine it sounds almost like a rod knock sound or what some call piston slap. I am curious to hear their response and what they will be willing to do

Yup. The Pentastar 3.6 had a pretty good failure rate in its initial run. Piston slap and a head redesign if I recall correctly. Growing pains of a new motor. At least they stood behind them and did the work. GM faught me for 3 weeks over repair of their 3.6 when a timing chain snapped in my old CTS. Then it kept happening to other cars across all the brands, and they ran out of excuses and owned up to it. Kudos to Chrysler for not screwing around on this one.

I remember a batch of 3.6 engines they purposely replaced for some defect with the heads. But I never heard of many engine replacements for the 3.6. I would have thought this 3.2 would have been trouble free right from the start. I seriously hope these 2 engines are not bad.

wow, you would think that with all the technology they have today regarding designing and assembling engines that this would be rare.how do these engines tend to hold up in the long run?this is not good news.
These pentastars are pretty new but are very awesome. A combination of power and mpg. It's mostly a head issue and it's pretty much hit/miss. Mostly earlier 2012 wranglers had em, but not all. Some even continued to the 2013 model. For what it's worth, jeep has an awesome warranty and if it shows any failure, it will be in the preliminary stages of ownership.

I'm sorry to hear ur experiences with your jeep. Hopefully you'll be back in the road in no time. Let us know what the dealer does.

I sure hope you are right about the preliminary stages and the warranty will cover any issues. I have a knock/rattle, sporadically though, and was hoping I was mishearing and it's the injectors. Now I'm very curious as to what the dealer will say about it.
