Cars.com did a head to head comparison of the Cherokee and CX-5, in nine categories. Here are the highlights and the verdict:

"Acceleration - Winner: CX-5 (the test Cherokee was a 4 cylinder)

Braking - Winner: CX-5

Handling - Winner: CX-5

Noise - Winner: Cherokee

......the Jeep has one of the quietest cabins in this class. ....

Ride - Winner: Cherokee

The CX-5's ride quality really impressed us. .....The Cherokee still outdoes it for comfort and isolation......

Interior quality - Winner: Cherokee

Seats - Winner: Cherokee

....Jeep gets a slight edge because its seats are otherwise wide and comfortable, and the rear seats slide forward and back....

Multimedia - Winner: Cherokee

....Uconnect system is one of our favorites, from its 8.4-inch touch-screen size and responsiveness to its inclusion of many features, some of which cooperate with smartphone apps....

Cargo - Winner: CX-5

Overall Results - Winner: Cherokee

Our lovable Cherokee eked out the win with five categories to the Mazda's four. The Mazda exhibited a more capable handling, acceleration and braking experience against the four-cylinder Cherokee that's continually battling physics. Our long-term Jeep rallied from its lacking acceleration with a more refined ride and interior experience topped with useful technology and a few standout features at its slightly higher as-tested price.

First paragraph they mention how the Nissan Rogue soundly beat the Cherokee so I guess you can factor that in to what they have to say on the CX-5 compare.

And they use the more powerful CX-5 engine and the less powerful Cherokee engine. I guess they can only use what they get but would love a more apples to apples compare.

I drove my co-workers CX-5 before buying the Jeep. I prefered the Jeep based on the V6 performance, panoramic sunroof, larger screen and selectable transmission.

I guess the reviews against the Mazda CX5 (or Nissan Rogue) are interesting...but that's all. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I didn't even consider either of them when looking for a new vehicle. Run them on the Rubicon Trail, then we'll talk :)

I am confused.
All wheel drive on the Mazda CX5? Is it all wheel all time? Or can it go between 2WD and 4x4?
I know the Cherokee 4x4 is a FWD and/or 4x4 as needed.
You can not really compare all wheel drive to a FWD/4x4 on demand set up.
I do consider the Jeep as having one of the best 4x4 systems around and the reason I keep wanting to own them over the competition.

The more powerful Mazda engine is what they sell the most of, and Jeep sells more I4s. So it actually makes sense. And they both make 184hp.

When we test drove the Jeep, back to back with the Mazda, it was pretty clear that if we could get a deal with the V6, that was the way to go. But if we had to chose between 4 cylinder cars, would probably have gone with the Mazda for the handling.

That makes sense but how do you know the I4 vs V6 breakdown for the Cherokee?
I haven't seen those numbers before.
Actually, the Cherokee is nearly 800 lbs heavier than the Mazda so using the 184 HP engines for both is not apples to apples, and is always going to result in advantage - Mazda. The 6.9 s 0-60 acceleration on the Cherokee V6 (Car and Driver test results) however, is only an unattainable dream for the Mazda!

Just bought my first Jeep ever last Friday! We decided on the Cherokee latitude FWD w/ the 3.2 V6 after test driving the Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Crosstek and Ford Escape. In my opinion, the Jeep was the hands-down winner on performance, interior quality, interior room & comfort, and most of all, the driving experience! I'll have to say that the Mazda was at the top of our list (pre-test drive) after reading the car mag. reviews. I only drove about a mile in the Mazda and was ready to go back to the dealership - very "vanilla" and had a very small car feel.

After the first mile test-driving the Cherokee, I was ready to take a trip cross-country! Very impressed so far............ : ))

This is one main reason why I love the 4cyl. I know some people here state the 4cyl is too noisy for them, just goes to show you to experience it for yourself as everyone has their own opinion.

Agreed. That was my conclusion after considerable research.

I test drove the top of the line CX-5 Touring as well... ("bigger" 2.5L engine). I really wanted to like it.

Every review I read of the CX-5 ahead of time talked about how "sporty" and "peppy" it was... as well as how "fun" the handling was. I didn't find that to be the case on my test drive. Ultimately, I left the dealership thinking that the CX-5 was a perfectly fine car... but I didn't have another thought about it after I stepped off the lot.

The V6 Trailhawk I test drove on the other hand... I couldn't STOP thinking about. Purchase decision made.

Test drove the new Rogue (liked a lot) and CX-5 (liked OK). Wife had an 05 Murano for 200k+ miles and we loved the car, but the CVT was the killer. No replacement parts and costly swap for new tranny if it goes. The CX-5 just didn't excite me although it was a good car.

When I sat in the Jeep the leather just seeped through me and I fell in love with it knowing that I was going to spend at least 10-15 hours per week in the car. After driving and checking out the interior + uConnect I was sold.

All the I4 v V6 talk all comes down to personal choice. I have a dually with straight 6 Cummins and not much of an exhaust. Is it loud, **** straight, but it's very comfortable to sit and drive. Noise doesn't bother me because the audio and speakers are very nice. Because I drive a lot of highway, mileage was important for me and my wife's 4 cyl Patriot has been just fine getting over 30mpg. Again, all down to personal choice and what you're willing to get.

Please don't laugh

I really never had the need to do any test drives. Always knew the Cherokee was the one. Drove the Acura RDX for curiosity only and drove what Jeep has for tests here, a Cherokee Altitude Base (cloth, no pan roof, 5inch u connect, 4cil) it basically sold the Trailhawk V6 >:D

Both are AWD in the sense they are front wheel drive and the rear differential gets torque transferred to it when the front wheels slip.
The Jeep adds to this with the selectable modes giving up to 100% lock between front and rear differentials.
