My 2019 Trailhawk Elite would not start today, so I jumped it using a portable jump starter, Started right up.

About an hour later it had the same issue, and I jumped it using a portable jump starter, Started right up.

Obviously, this is going to need a battery BUT what is the process for changing this battery. I have no problem driving to the local AutoZone to get a battery (I've heard the even help you install it), BUT I am worried that the nav and possibly other things will not work if this is disconnected from the battery during the switch.

can anyone shed some light on this - Thanks

For cowards like me I go to Batteries Plus Bulbs, buy an X2 Power AGM battery and take my Jeep and battery to my Jeep dealer and let them install it.
You will probably have to wait several days for Batteries Plus Bulbs to get the battery from the Warehouse, be patient, the wait will be worth it.
Let the Jeep dealer deal with the 'drama', there won't be any because they know what they are doing.
Batteries Plus Bulbs will want a 'core' so save your old battery.
Order the battery on the Batteries Plus Bulbs Web site so you get a small discount.
The battery is expensive. You know what J E E P means right?

Yes.. I know the acronym :-( it's the NAV I have concerns about. I was thinking Autozone (near me) or Costco (best price) for the battery.

I haven't heard of any NAV problems following a battery swap, here on the forum.

Order for disconnect > reconnect :
  • Disconnect Negative first, always. This prevents accidental shorts with chassis parts when you work on the positive terminal.
  • Reconnect Positive first. Again, to prevent accidental shorting out when working on the Positive side.

The only problem you may face with a battery out for too long : a check engine light. But it doesn't last long (1-2 days).

Looking quickly at some of your older posts, I can't seem to find any where you specified which engine you have ? Did you have any early signs that the battery was dying ? They usually don't just drop dead like that, with no warning...

You'll be fine. Just be quick. You can do it in the parking lot in like 5mins with the proper tools...😎

Thanks all. The engine is a 3.2, the only sign was stop / start stopped working 1 month ago but the vehicle was running fine.

When I bought this 8 months ago (used) from a Toyota dealer, the stop / start was not working. I told the dealer I would not take it till it was fixed. He sent it out to a Jeep dealer in his 'corporate family' who stated they replaced the battery, and start / stop worked till about a month ago. Now whether they replaced the battery with a brand new one who knows.
Even in a Jeep 8 months is short for the battery, but start / stop stopped working shortly after I moved to the retirement community (the Cherokee hardly gets driven any more, sometimes less than 20 miles a week).

Right now the Jeep is dead (won't start), if I jump it using a portable jumper it fires right up. I'll head out tomorrow AM to Autozone, Orielly's or the Jeep dealer.

I did negative first removing and installing battery
When disconnecting : Negative comes off first. Reconnecting : Negative gets back on Last. This is 'by the book', for safety reasons.

If the battery was replaced 8 months ago then it would still be under warranty. Take it back to the place that worked it or to a parts dealer that handles that brand of battery. They’ll probably test it or replace it outright.
Very True. OP might get the runaround here though because the battery was apparently replaced by another dealer, part of 'the family' of dealerships. If there is no paper trail...

Could also be a loose battery connector issue (long shot).

Not driving the Jeep 20 miles a week is a problem, for the battery. You should consider a trickle charger/maintainer, for the future.

Thanks, I'm guessing that the aggravation will exceed the cost of the battery. Everything was fine for 6 months, about 1 month after being in a retirement community the start stop stopped working. I can't prove that a Jeep dealer replaced that battery, but I know it was replaced from when I originally looked at the engine.

I must admit both the Cherokee and my Wrangler (traded it for the Cherokee) has better tech then my 4Runner and times I miss the reliability of the 4Runner.

The tech is part of the problem, for battery draw, on any modern vehicle though. This Cherokee is especially difficult on batteries or, put another way, the batteries designed for this Jeep are not up to the task, for different reasons. There are premium AGM batteries out there (Northstar, X2 Power and Odyssey), but they cost more.

If the Jeep sits for long periods of time and you only drive short stints when you do drive it, I highly recommend regular charging (with a smart charger/maintainer). Don't know if that's possible for you though...

I have a 2019 overland 3.2 v6 . I bought a x2 from battery plus , . I have a portable charger with a maintainer , I plugged it into my USB port on console, to keep juices flowing, replaced battery in 10 min. Started car up and drove it about 30 miles to make sure everything was good then shut it off . No problems

Also, don't go too long. Its very easy for other issues to arise when the battery is weak. For example, if you odometer starts flashing, you will need a proxy alignment. That generally must be done by the dealer.

I wasn't going to risk losing anything when I changed my battery. I used a memory saver and a small 12V battery plugged into the OBD port to save everything during the swap. Worked fine.
I figure why take a chance something will go wrong.

You won't lose anything. I believe the only thing that reset on mine was the current temperature the climate control was set too. Everything else was the same. I've disconnected the battery probably 2 dozen times or more when working on electrical stuff.

Check the "Manufacture Date" sticker on the battery for a clue as to whether or not they put in a new one 8 months ago. Also if it's not an AGM battery and you are using Stop/Start, that can be problematic as well.
