Wife’s 2014 Limited. ADII. 86K. Noticed oil on garage floor under engine recently. That prompted me to finally change the OE oil cooler housing minor leak that I’d been aware of for a while. Replaced with the all aluminum Dorman part. Pulled upper and lower intake manifold. New plugs, since I was in the neighborhood. New IM seals, torqued everything to spec. Cleaned engine valley between the heads of all the old oil & coolant. Uneventful fix, or so I thought.
Started Jeep. Got the “4wd temporarily unavailable“ message. That got my attention. Uh oh, what’d I screw up? I’ve since read/learned that was probably due to the battery being disconnected (for the repair). Initially, it wouldn’t shift to any of the Snow, Sport Mud/Sand modes. Test drove fine. By the end of the drive, I was able to shift it into all of those electronic sub modes, no problem. Then, I tried to test 4wd low. Neutral, barely rolling, it attempted the shift but failed after 5-10 seconds. Forget what the actual msg was but essentially ‘unable to complete shift’. No “service 4wd“ msgs, no grinding, lurching or any other warnings. Tried several times. Same results. Full disclosure, we don’t use 4wd low very much and it could have well been like this for a while. Dunno. Prob been 3-4 years since it was last in Low and that was just me testing it briefly.
Which brings me back to the oil under the Jeep. After valley was all cleaned up, I wiped everything down well with rags, brake cleaner. All the previously leaked oil was removed. After the test drive, oil is back. Engine valley’s totally dry, so it’s not coming from the ’repaired’ area. It’s not pooled or anything (couple of drops on the floor) but definitely newly leaked oil on the bottom of the trans/ptu area. So I’m wondering if a Ptu oil leak (it doesn’t look like trans fluid) could cause the No Shift Into Low or should I be exploring other things?
I‘m also just shy of 9 years into my “8 yr/150K“ extended powertrain warranty, so this repair‘s all on me.
