A tip on winter weather and frozen gas cap cover

So just thought I’d share a little light bulb of an idea I had today. Just got a bunch of snow the last two days and there was ice all around my gas cover so I knew if I tried to pop it open with the button in the door that it would be an issue.
Then it hit me! Hot water. Grabbed an empty 2 liter soda bottle and filled it with hot water from my kitchen sink. Was 12 degrees Fahrenheit outside but not even half the bottle later and about 30 seconds and all the ice was melted.
Hope this can help someone.

I've done that too. Here though sometimes it's colder, much colder when I find the door is frozen shut. Pouring hot water in frigid temps means I have to clean it up after, to make sure none is left behind to only refreeze instantly.
With a plastic card ready (I keep one at all times), I'm all done in about 1-2 minutes, and can safely shut the door when done filling up. And I can do this anywhere, anytime.

Heya mark. Yes I thought of that too, don’t want to make an ice puddle in driveway. Plus you have to plan ahead for this. Card would definitely work if you’re out and need gas while on road. Can’t very well keep a bottle of hot water ready in the car.
I was just seeing a lot of posts about this so I thought it might be a nice tip for some.

Would vinyl magnetic sheeting work to cover the entire gas cap cover and the area where water leaks in?
I think the gas cap cover is plastic so the cover would have to extend well beyond it to stay attached.
Will stay affixed while driving or parked and keep anything from getting past the gap and freezing it closed.
Then just remove the vinyl magnetic sheeting when you gas-up.
Spray paint the side you see to match the car body color or do something artistic.
Could get a custom design to put on the vinyl magnetic sheeting. Sign company's do this all the time.
My 2014 TH has a release button so you might have to remove the sheeting before you could pop open the cover?
Newer Cherokees you just push and release the cover so this should work just fine.
I used to use magnetic sheeting with temporary side body molding and it worked great.

It freezes on me only a few times per year, one winter it didn't happen at all, so the plastic card trick is all I need, really. And you don't hurt the paint at all.

I read that Pam or other non-stick cooking oil works great for preventing this, though I never tried it.

Hot water turns to cold ice right where you don't need it! :cautious:

Yeah, I live in Arizona, but 1) I'm a native Yooper (look it up), and 2) we have a cabin in the AZ mountains. It was 7F (-14C for most of the world) there a couple of days ago so it does cool off a bit.

I took some silicone and sprayed it onto a rag then wiped the gasket very thoroughly, as well as the weatherstripping around the hatch and doors.

I got the mfc fuel door to solve the freezing problem, looks great and never have to deal with a frozen fuel door again
