Are the cam position sensors on both sides of the engine the same and can they be interchangeable?

Yes. It's a common way of diagnosing whether the sensor is bad on a 3.2 (swap one with the other).
Note that if you're getting codes for the CPS, it's usually not a bad sensor but a symptom of something else. Those sensors don't often go bad. Usually the root cause is an oil pressure issue; - phaser issue, rocker/hydraulic lifter issue or cam lobe wear or sometimes a faulty injector issue (if accompanied by misfire codes).
Yes, from the magnetic wheels on the ends of the camshafts but I think @Jeremy's is talking about his cam position sensors (the actual sensors that go through the openings in the left and right bank valve covers). No special precautions for them.
I recall the first time working around those cam wheels. I was paranoid checking all my tools, using plastic tools wherever I could etc. The Service Manual puts the caution in this big bold type that it freaks you out!!!!
