I'm looking to install a tow hitch with lights and deciding whether or not do it myself or my local dealer. The actual hitch seems straightforward enough but the wiring harness install is putting me off a bit. @sqenixs in their thread said there might be an easier way to install the wiring without needing to feed it all the way to the front footwell.

Now my questions are:

  • My build sheet says it has "Trailer Tow Group" and "Trailer Tow Wiring Harness". Do I still need to do a wiring harness install? Or does this indicate that I could possibly get away with an easier install? Is the sure fire way to confirm is to take off the bumper and look for the 13 pin XY609A connector?
  • I rang my local dealer and they quoted a 3hr install which I assumed meant having to run wire from the back of the car all the way to the front. However they never asked for my VIN, just my trim level and year of the car.
  • @sqenixs have you (or anyone else) figured out if the "easy method" enables the tow brake controller?

For reference the wiring install guide for the full wiring from front to back is:

The install guide for the hitch itself is:

Hi there,

I'll let @sqenixs go at the wiring thing, but I have to ask : if your build sheet says "Trailer Tow Group", why don't you already have the hitch receiver and wiring already installed ? Maybe it's an export thing (you're in Australia), but over here - and as far as I know - "Trailer Tow Group" means everything is there from factory. There is a "Tow Prep" option available on Overland trim I think : those require receiver and wiring be added, but all other hardware and anti-sway program are in place.

None of this is confirmed yet but I believe that if you have the grey brake controller connector in the front under the dash and the green connector in the rear that it may work. I haven't had a chance to prove this on my vehicle. I next want to see if the connectors are powered without enabling the tow option in the electronics. A sure way to install the wiring is with the official kit, but it is a pain to install. If the dealer quoted 3hrs that is not too bad. The concern I have is whether or not the brake controller connector works properly with the kit harness. I don't know for sure but I would assume no.

In summary the reason I'm looking into redoing it the "factory" way is because I believe that you are missing features by installing the kit, even if you had a dealer enable the tow option in the computer. However I have no proof of this. I wish someone with the trailer tow option enabled, as well as the kit harness installed, could confirm this for me, or if FCA could confirm this for me. The features I'm concerned about are

  • automatically disable rear parking sensors when a trailer is plugged into the 7 pin connector
  • trailer brake controller connector in the front actually working using the kit harness

The instructions you posted are an updated copy of the ones that came with my kit. Looks like they are improved a bit over what I had.

I honestly don't know why it doesn't have the hitch receiver and the wiring already with it if it's on the build sheet. It really is baffling me. I might have to query the dealer what the go is and if I'm lucky I might get a free tow hitch :D

Just confirming that you're saying you might be missing the two features if you install the easy/shortcut method ie. 68347439AD or 68347440AD? I might ring up my dealer and quote the part numbers and see what they say. Personally I'd be happy to forgo those features over installing the full front to back harness. I'll post back with any info I can gather.

No it is the other way around. I believe you are missing those features if you install the hard method front to back. I think the easy method (with the dealer also enable the towing option in the computer) will get you the features. My dealer could not give me a satisfactory answer on this. All they ever repeat is some variation of "that kit is the correct one for your vehicle according to our computer system so all other options are irrelevant" sort of thing. Because the computer is all knowing lol. They either cannot or will not try for a better explanation from FCA.

68347439AD - will not work due to the fuses and the ability to add the fuses to the power distributor block (located in the engine bay) have been physically removed (fuse pins pulled). Therefore the harness will plug in and you can go to the dealership and activate the tow package. Unfortunately the ability to add fuses is not available. (at least on a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk)

So it seems you are right sir, I just installed the 68347439AD wiring and it didn't work so I checked the fuses and oh boy they are missing, worst part is they cannot be added because there is no pin or contact to put the fuse into... The empty slot is there but not the contact pin. I don't understand why they made it this way but I guess it is what it is... Still trying to figure out a way to make it work but I have no idea what to do at this point.

I already ran the full length harness which through MOPAR is listed as 82215686AB. i am trying to troubleshoot and find why its not working.
In that case, you should only be missing the dealership to "turn on" the towing functions on the computer, I saw while they were doing it on their tablet connected to my cherokee, its something that says something like "tow lights module" and they need to switch it from "disabled" to "enabled", and then it will work (y)

Man, same thing happened to me, they couldn't find it on the options given they said, so I asked them to show me all the options available on their tablet and I went trough them all, folder by folder, one by one, for like 10 - 15 minutes until we found it, there are a couple electric options you need to enable regarding the towing, they all say something like tow this or towing that... the tech guy was surprised it was even there, he said he never saw it before.

its frustrating we need to do the research in order to make them make it work, but well, it is what it is.
