Im having a problem with my 2016 cherokee trailhawk.

Liftgate opens and closes only MANUALLY.

When i use the fob or left button next to steering wheel to open the lift gate it actually opens by 2 inches then shuts back down and locks.

Same with closing, if i ioen the trunk manually and now want to close it using the fob or any other button then the trunk gate will descend 2 inches and pop back up open.

This has been like this for 2 months now. I removed any obstructions, obviously thats not the case, i pulled out the fuse and replaced it with a new one but that didnt work.

Also, the trunk open/close button situated inside the trunk under the mechanical strut does not respond at all.

Any help would be appreciated

Either the motor is hitting some internal resistance or the helper gas lift strut on the other side of lift gate is so weak the gate is too heavy for the electric motor alone. I recently had to replace that helper strut on my 2014 since the power lift gate was struggling and half the time would give up and close. Same goes for closing. If gate moves too fast (too much weight on motor) it will reverse since it sees an issue.

Yep, I agree with @jcool001985. Probably the "Helper" strut. These are cheap and easy. You want to try that, since the more strain you put on the "Screw Jack Motor", the possibility of burning that up greatly increases. That's NOT cheap and easy to fix.
