Short version: I just bought a 2025 Cherokee Latitude with 4x4 w/ 2.4L 4-cyl and just had the 4wd turned-on (Dial needed to be replaced to engage) and now my gas mileage is horrible (18 mpg), I’m keeping the 4wd system in auto at all times. Would like to know how to improve the mpg.
Long version: I just bought a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude from the original owner. The car has a 2.4L 4-cylinder (Not very powerful, but saw it had good gas mileage) and has 4x4 as well (Not the advanced one, just the system with the auto, snow, sport, mud/sand options). When I bought the car (A week ago), the 4wd system was not engaged as the dial needed to be replaced, I was told the car was stuck in two-wheel drive. I got the dial replaced and the system started working (Indicator light next to mode options is now turned on and when changing modes, my digital gauge shows it). When I tested out the car before buying, I did note that the car was under 20 mpg combined, which the advertised mpg is 23 online. But once I reset it and had driven it for a couple days, I was getting around 23 mpg. Once I got the 4wd fixed and enabled, my mpg has plummeted every drive to now be at 18.2 mpg. I’ve kept the 4wd in auto at all times. I’m not stoked about such the low mpg as my family member’s 2018 v6 AWD Durango is getting 18.6 mpg despite being a bigger car and having a bigger engine. Really hoping someone can give me some guidance to improve my gas mileage. Can I turn the 4wd off? Is sport mode better? Even noting the miles until empty indicator, it feels like the car eats up a lot more gas than it should.
