So to my disappointment today I learned that adding a hitch extension reduces your vehicle's maximum tongue weight by a lot. In other words, for people like me who wanted to add a tire hitch carrier for an extra hitch point, one for the trailer and one for a bike rack, know that you cannot do this with a Cherokee since it doesn't have the tongue weight capacity for it.

I'm sure there are people doing this right now, but they are probably going over the manufacturers tongue weight limit. A hitch extension, however does not modify the GVWR.

I have used a dual hitch receiver several times but only with a goalpost and a utility trailer. The trailer empty weight is under 400 lbs (2000 lbs max)and the goalpost was to haul long lumber on the roof racks so I'm guessing the total tongue weight was 300 lbs max in my situation

Not sure if this is the style you're talking about but I guess it depends on the trailer tongue weight to begin with...

Tongue weight is 450lbs rear axle weight rating is 2805lbs. Make it easy go and weight your vehicle. Front both and rear axles and get a weight to see how much room you have to haul on a hitch mounted cargo carrier.
