Detroit News said:
Chrysler Group LLC has built more than 12,000 2014 Jeep Cherokees, but has not shipped a single one to dealers and is still working to resolve a problem with the programming of the crossover’s new nine-speed transmission.

“Chrysler Group is in the final stages of validating the updated powertrain calibrations,” said Gualberto Ranieri, vice president of communications for Chrysler, in an email to The Detroit News. “The company will not ship vehicles until we are fully satisfied the Cherokee meets customer expectations for performance, refinement and quality.”

More than three months after the vehicle went into production in Toledo, Chrysler is trying to get the transmission to shift smoothly in what CEO Sergio Marchionne has called a make-or-break vehicle for the Auburn Hills automaker, one that is key to capturing a fast-growing segment of the market.

Ranieri noted that the Cherokee is an all-new vehicle that, in addition to its all-new transmission, boasts two new powertrains and three advanced four-wheel-drive systems, all of which need to integrate flawlessly.

“Once the latest powertrain calibration is validated, the company will be able to quickly update the powertrain software on Cherokees already built and ship vehicles to dealerships around the country in quantity,” he said. ?

Chrysler has been using its factory workers to conduct extensive test drives and isolate the problem. Work on the Cherokee line was slowed last month, but never stopped — despite the absence of a fix for the problem. The line has since resumed to full production.

“The problem is the logic. Like most transmissions these days, it’s adaptive. It learns the way the customer drives and it makes the shift quality better for that type of driving,” said auto industry expert Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics LLP, who said he has heard similar reports from inside the company. “They want the transmission to be just smooth as silk, and that is apparently not the case at all.”

He believes Chrysler’s decision to hold the vehicles at the Toledo factory is the correct one.

“It’s better to delay it than to risk what happened with the (Ford) Escape,” Hall said, referring to a series of glitches that afflicted Ford Motor Co.’s new compact crossover in the months following its launch last year.

But customers are growing impatient.

Mark Orlowski, of Warren, has wanted a Cherokee since the new crossover debuted at the New York International Auto Show last March. He planned to buy one when they went on sale. Chrysler planned to begin building them in May, but a series of delays pushed the on-sale date back — first to June, then to September.

“I actually talked to a salesman yesterday. He still did not have a ship date for me,” Orlowski said Thursday, adding that he understands why Chrysler wants to hold the vehicle until the bugs are worked out. “It’s the right thing to do, but on the other hand, it makes me leery. But I can’t wait to get my hands on one and test-drive it.”

The delays also may make Chrysler miss its financial targets for the third quarter and, perhaps, the year.

“The second half (financial goal for 2013) is not doable without a proper launch of the Cherokee,” Marchionne warned in a July conference call with analysts and reporters.

Just received an email from our dealer...

Great news your 2014 Jeep Cherokee has been assigned a ship date of 10/22/2014. That means it will arrive around the 2nd week of November. However, as they have not given a launch release date it could be held for a bit longer. As soon as I learn more I will let you know. Again thank you for your order.

10/22/2014?!? God I hope not!
I just watched a cherokee video review which said "they are in show rooms now". Lolol oh really? Tomorrow is day 29 in D1, come on build it already !!!

Mine is in D1 too. As much as I want it, to be honest, I would just as soon they build a few more and get all the bugs out before they build mine.

On another note, the Jeep website is saying one is actually in transit to a delaer in Garden City, Michigan.
I'm curious if the ones being build now already have the update or do they still needed to do the update. Either way I'm hoping it gets built tomorrow or wed.
According to the jeep website, there are now 9 Cherokees showing up in transit, where yesterday there were only three.
The dealerships in Canada are running a Jeep special starting on the 17th Oct and they expect each dealer to have a cherokee by then, at least that is what they say.

Go on Jeep.ca.... and do compare models... we have now the fuel rating for the TH with 4cyl.... plus we can now build it without the full leather inside...

Good thing .. it is the exact same fuel rating as my current CRV... so should be about the same :)

What kind of special are we talking about?

I guess some kind of special promotion here in Ontario, of course there is some kind of draw of the kind that I never seem to win for a Jeep plus maybe special pricing for vehicles ordered during this event.

So I I don't understand all those jeeps in the photo still need the update? How long is that gonna take? It's to bad the dealers could take care of the update. Does anyone know if the recently produced ones need the update? What's with all the white on the window, protective plastic?

I think the "white" you are seeing is glare the camera is picking up from the cars sitting in the sun in an open field. On closer look there may be some protection on there especially since they knew they were going to be stored. I live in Michigan and I am guessing by looking at those pictures those fields are located in suburbs near Detroit Metropolitan Airport. I read somewhere that the software upgrade takes approximately 30 minuets a car. I also read that Chrysler was thinking of hiring independent contractors to make the upgrading process go as quickly as possible. As far as dealers not doing the upgrade Chrysler said it did not trust the dealers to do it properly nor did they want to deliver a new car that they knew had problems to begin with. You can read about all of this on the Allpar website.
The latest count that I found says that there are nearly 19,000 Cherokees that have been built and there are currently just 9 that are listed as "in transit" to a dealership. As we all know the delay comes from the transmission which apparently has trouble engaging the 8th and 9th gears properly on the Cherokee's new 2.4-liter Tigershark engine.

Maybe the headlights won't end up being the most controversial part of the vehicle.
