Detroit News said:
Chrysler Group LLC has built more than 12,000 2014 Jeep Cherokees, but has not shipped a single one to dealers and is still working to resolve a problem with the programming of the crossover’s new nine-speed transmission.

“Chrysler Group is in the final stages of validating the updated powertrain calibrations,” said Gualberto Ranieri, vice president of communications for Chrysler, in an email to The Detroit News. “The company will not ship vehicles until we are fully satisfied the Cherokee meets customer expectations for performance, refinement and quality.”

More than three months after the vehicle went into production in Toledo, Chrysler is trying to get the transmission to shift smoothly in what CEO Sergio Marchionne has called a make-or-break vehicle for the Auburn Hills automaker, one that is key to capturing a fast-growing segment of the market.

Ranieri noted that the Cherokee is an all-new vehicle that, in addition to its all-new transmission, boasts two new powertrains and three advanced four-wheel-drive systems, all of which need to integrate flawlessly.

“Once the latest powertrain calibration is validated, the company will be able to quickly update the powertrain software on Cherokees already built and ship vehicles to dealerships around the country in quantity,” he said. ?

Chrysler has been using its factory workers to conduct extensive test drives and isolate the problem. Work on the Cherokee line was slowed last month, but never stopped — despite the absence of a fix for the problem. The line has since resumed to full production.

“The problem is the logic. Like most transmissions these days, it’s adaptive. It learns the way the customer drives and it makes the shift quality better for that type of driving,” said auto industry expert Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics LLP, who said he has heard similar reports from inside the company. “They want the transmission to be just smooth as silk, and that is apparently not the case at all.”

He believes Chrysler’s decision to hold the vehicles at the Toledo factory is the correct one.

“It’s better to delay it than to risk what happened with the (Ford) Escape,” Hall said, referring to a series of glitches that afflicted Ford Motor Co.’s new compact crossover in the months following its launch last year.

But customers are growing impatient.

Mark Orlowski, of Warren, has wanted a Cherokee since the new crossover debuted at the New York International Auto Show last March. He planned to buy one when they went on sale. Chrysler planned to begin building them in May, but a series of delays pushed the on-sale date back — first to June, then to September.

“I actually talked to a salesman yesterday. He still did not have a ship date for me,” Orlowski said Thursday, adding that he understands why Chrysler wants to hold the vehicle until the bugs are worked out. “It’s the right thing to do, but on the other hand, it makes me leery. But I can’t wait to get my hands on one and test-drive it.”

The delays also may make Chrysler miss its financial targets for the third quarter and, perhaps, the year.

“The second half (financial goal for 2013) is not doable without a proper launch of the Cherokee,” Marchionne warned in a July conference call with analysts and reporters.

I talked with a sales rep at a dealer here in Dallas and they indicated they have 4 pages of Jeep Cherokee's that have been moved to Mesquite at a staging area for the dealers. None can leave the staging area though until they have had the SW updates applied, but I thought it was interesting that they actually have moved the vehicles closer to their intended markets. She said that by next week they should be released.

She is checking to see if she has a red fully loaded Trailhawk in those 4 pages, and if so, I am going to go and put a deposit down.

Hudson, I specifically asked for yours and she said no problem :)

Actually.... when she called back, she indicated that all EXCEPT the Trailhawks had been staged that way and would begin releasing next week. She said all of the Trailhawks are still in Ohio as apparently they are having additional transmission issues with those. She said don't expect to see any Trailhawks for another month. Doh! (of course, no idea how knowledgeable sales reps really are, but she seemed pretty competent and actually talked to the fleet manager before getting back to me).

OMGWTFBBQSAUCE?! I hope you are kidding. Though, it would make sense based on the additional offroad transmission options included on the Trailhawk.

I think her information may be old. The order tracking system at Jeep Garage is showing a pre-ship notice to the ramp for my TH. I don't think that would be the case if they were still having transmission issues. There is another that was just built that has a pre-ship notice as well.

I definitely hope you are correct as I really don't want to wait another month on these things. Let us know when/if it ships.

I went to the dealer today to put down a deposit. She said her information yesterday was wrong. All the Cherokees that are at the staging area in Mesquite are having to be sent back for the firmware update (does that really make sense, seems ridiculous that they wouldn't just send people to update them in Mesquite). She was right in that no Trailhawks had been shipped yet. She said, because of that, it might actually be the Trailhawks that arrive at dealers first since they don't have to be sent back. Anyway, I have one reserved, but when I see it is anyone's guess.

FYI, I asked for 1% under MSRP and got it. (i.e. about $400 off). I know that isn't much, but you can't really expect much on a brand new car. Supply and demand. I am sure some did better but I am happy with that.

So last Sunday I emailed Jeep with my VIN # and got this response:

Currently your vehicle is showing in hold status as of 10/06/2013. Your
vehicle is due to be unloaded from the railcar in CA on 10/13/2013. The
ETA of your vehicle will be the week of 10/14/13.

I called the dealer to, hopefully, get a firm date of when they would get them in and he said my Cherokee wouldn't ship until Oct 22nd (according to his search) and probably wouldn't go on sale until early November.

So I re-emailed Jeep on Thursday and now received this response:

According to our records your vehicle is showing in JS OB status.

I see your vehicle has been built. You are lucky; your vehicle has been
selected for 100% inspection, which will take some time. Your vehicle
will be put through rigorous testing and quality audits before being
released.

There is no timeline given nor a delivery date.

Funny. I don't feel "Lucky".

Funny. I don't feel "Lucky".
Don't worry, this means they will test out everything. They will even crash your vehicle into a brick wall several times to ensure all the airbags are working correctly.

Sweet. My '01 Cherokee got hit by a street sweeper and had some damage but it suevived. My new Jeep could easily take on a brick wall or two...
